Five big ideas, called the Fundamental Principles of Biology, help scientists explain everything about living things. There are five main principles: 1. All living things are made of cells. 2. Living things pass traits to their young using genes. 3. They change over time (this is called evolution). 4. Living things keep their bodies balanced (this is called homeostasis). 1/4 5. All Living Things Are Made of Cells Have you ever built something with blocks? Imagine if your body were built using tiny blocks called cells. A cell is the smallest part of a living thing. Some living things have only one cell, like bacteria. Bigger living things, like trees and people, have millions or billions of cells! Each cell has a special job. Some help us move, some help us think, and others help us fight off sickness. Cells make up all living things, including plants, animals, and people. Dinosaurs walked the Earth, and animals looked very different. That’s because all living things change slowly over time. For example: Giraffes have long necks so that they can reach tall trees. Polar bears have white fur to blend in with the snow. This change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes thousands or millions of years. But it helps living things adapt, survive, and grow stronger. That’s why evolution is a key part of the Fundamental Principles of Biology.   4. Living Things Keep Their Bodies Balanced (Homeostasis) Your body is very smart. It knows how to keep everything working the right way. This balance is called homeostasis. If you’re too hot, your body cools you down by sweating. Or If you’re cold, your body warms you up by shivering. If you drink lots of water, your body can eliminate the extra. Even animals and plants keep balance. A fish controls the amount of salt in its body, and a cactus saves water to stay alive in the desert. Without homeostasis, our bodies wouldn’t work properly. It’s like having a thermostat inside us that keeps everything just right.   5. All Living Things Need Energy Think about what happens when you don’t eat for a while you feel tired, right? That’s because all living things need energy to do everything! Plants get their energy from the sun through a process called photosynthesis. Animals get energy by eating food. Our bodies change food into energy, a process called metabolism. Energy helps us walk, talk, run, think, and even sleep. Without energy, cells can’t do their jobs. That’s why this principle is one of the most important parts of the Fundamental Principles of Biology. 3/4 How Do These Principles Work Together? These five ideas may seem different, but they all connect: Cells are the building blocks of life. Genes are instructions inside cells. Evolution explains how genes and traits change over time.
